Islamic Perspective on Mourning, Grief, and Bereavement

Mourning, grief, and bereavement are very difficult emotions to deal with and Islam provides spiritual solutions to help people grieve properly. The mourning period for Muslims is 3 days for the death of a loved one, after which people are asked to return to their usual lifestyles. Mourning means a period where people can breakaway from their daily lifestyles and gather with family and friends to pray and remember their loved one.

Iddah for Widows: Concept, Duration & Purpose

A widowed woman is given the facility of Iddah, which is a period of waiting lasting 4 months and 10 days (four menstrual cycles). Throughout this period, the widow is unable to remarry and should not interact with non-mahram men (unless for necessary requirements). This specific length of time includes the 40 days for observance of final rites and farewell rituals for a deceased person, as well as 3 months of the female reproductive cycle.

If the widow discovers that she is pregnant within this time, the lack of interaction with other men ensures that there is no confusion as to the parentage of the child. Such confusion can arise if the widow decides to remarry quickly and before 4 months and 10 days. This restriction does not apply to post-menopausal women.

Guidelines and Compassion During the Iddah Period

During the Iddah widows are required to stay at home as much as possible, but they can leave the house for necessary work and activities. The Iddah gives a woman the time to find patience in her difficult time and allows her to rest and recuperate whilst the community aids her and tends to her needs, thus relieving her of household duties and other chores.

As the marriage bond is a sacred relationship, it is important for a bereaved spouse to especially take time to recover from this separation and turn to Allah Almighty without the distraction of worldly concerns.

The Iddah is a compassionate dispensation awarded to a woman in Islam which provides her the physical and mental space to deal with her emotions and psychological well-being and forms part of the wider healing process.
